Evolving Facebook’s Iconography for billions
Nucleus is Facebook's next-generation iconography system, designed to unify functional iconography across the platform.
As part of Meta's Visual Systems team, I contributed to the redesign of a system used daily by billions of people across navigation, communication, discovery, and product experiences.
The result is a more cohesive visual language that improves consistency, scalability, and long-term maintainability across Facebook's ecosystem.
Early Explorations
The development of Nucleus began with a broad exploration of form, geometry, and visual behavior.
By testing different approaches, we identified the principles that would ultimately shape a more cohesive, scalable, and recognizable iconography system.
Principles
Inclusive
Create icons that feel familiar and accessible to a global audience.
Friendly
Use approachable shapes and clear metaphors that are easy to recognize and understand.
Bold
Bring clarity and confidence through strong forms and purposeful visual decisions.
Contemporary
Reduce complexity and focus on what matters most with a clean, modern aesthetic.
Building the System
At the core of Nucleus is a shared geometric foundation.
Every icon was rebuilt using consistent construction principles, creating stronger relationships across the entire library while improving recognition and visual harmony.
The result is a system that feels intentional, balanced, and cohesive at every scale.
Evolution
The redesign focused on refining the visual language while preserving familiarity.
Icons became simpler, more balanced, and easier to recognize, with greater consistency across the entire set.
In Product
Designed as a foundational system, Nucleus is integrated across key Facebook surfaces including navigation, Marketplace, notifications, menus, and utility experiences.
The icons work consistently across mobile and desktop, creating a more unified experience throughout the platform.
A Unified System
Nucleus established a shared visual language for Facebook.
Built around consistency, scalability and usability, the system brought hundreds of icons into a single coherent framework.
Launch
Nucleus launched across Facebook in Fall 2024.
Today, it serves as the foundation for Facebook's functional iconography, supporting a more cohesive product experience at global scale.
